Destination weddings

Lake Como, Tuscany, the Cotswolds and beyond.

One of the most common concerns I hear from brides is whether their hair is thick enough to achieve their dream wedding hairstyle. My answer? Thin or fine hair really doesn’t need to be an issue anymore.

The bridal hair industry has evolved so much over the years, and with the incredible range of products, treatments and hair extensions now available, there are more possibilities than ever before.

With the right preparation, professional volumising products and, if you want them, clip-in or tape extensions, thin and fine hair can be worn up, half up or down on your wedding day. Your trial, three to four months before the wedding, is where you see the style on your own hair.

The power of hair preparation

For brides wanting to invest in their natural hair ahead of their wedding, there are some fantastic treatments and products designed to improve hair condition, reduce breakage and support healthy hair growth. Starting a good haircare routine months before your wedding can make a real difference to the overall health and appearance of your hair.

We also have access to incredible professional volumising products that can create thickness, texture and lift, transforming even the finest hair.

If your hair is thinning or shedding before the wedding

Some brides notice their hair seems thinner in the months before a wedding, often around the parting or the front. If that is you, tell your stylist at your trial.

If the shedding is new or sudden, speak to your GP. Hair loss can have many causes and some can be treated, so it is worth asking early. The NHS has a clear guide to hair loss and when to get help.

Wedding hair extensions: a game changer for thin hair

This is where the magic really happens!

Hair extensions have come such a long way. The quality, colour matching, textures and lengths available today are incredible, allowing us to create beautiful, natural-looking results that blend seamlessly with your own hair.

Whether it’s clip-in extensions, tape extensions or other temporary methods, there is an option to suit almost every bride.

And the best part? Extensions don’t have to be a long-term commitment. Clip-in extensions can be fitted on the morning of your wedding and removed that very evening if you wish.

If you are thinking about extensions, mention it when you book your trial, so they can be tried with your style.

The best bridal hairstyles for thin and fine hair

Extensions aren’t necessarily just about adding length, either. They’re fantastic for creating fullness, structure and volume, whether you’re dreaming of glamorous Hollywood waves, a beautifully sculpted updo or a soft, romantic half-up hairstyle.

StyleWhat it needs on fine hairAsk at your trial
Hollywood wavesFullness and volume, from volumising products and, if you want them, extensionsWould extensions give my waves more body?
A sculpted updoStructure and fullnessHow will my veil or hair piece sit in it?
A soft, romantic half-upVolume through the crown and fullness in the lengthsWould clip-in extensions add fullness to the down section?

Hollywood waves are one of the looks I am best known for.

Will my wedding hair last all day?

Brides I have styled say it lasted. One wrote that her hair and makeup “looked amazing all day (despite the 30 degree heat)”. Another wrote that her hair and makeup “did NOT budge the entire evening”.

On the day, I stay with you after your hair is finished, help with your dress and place your veil, and see you down the aisle. For destination weddings I stay all day for touch ups and look changes.

What to bring to your trial

  • Photos of styles you love, and if you can, photos of them on hair like yours.
  • Your veil or hair pieces, so the style can be tried with them.
  • Your extensions, if you already have them.
  • Your hair as you normally wear it, and an honest word about anything you are worried about, such as your parting.

There is more on how the trial works in my guide to choosing your artist and the trial.

Your dream bridal hair is more achievable than you think

As a bridal hairstylist, I genuinely believe that having fine or thin hair shouldn’t mean compromising on your dream wedding look.

With the right preparation, professional products, carefully selected extensions and expert styling techniques, we can achieve so much more than brides often realise.

So, if you’ve been saving inspiration photos but worrying that your own hair isn’t thick or long enough, please don’t let that hold you back.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best wedding hair for thin hair?

Hollywood waves, a sculpted updo and a soft, romantic half-up can all work on thin hair, with good preparation, professional volumising products and, where you want them, extensions for fullness and volume. The right one depends on your dress and veil, and your trial is where it is decided.

Can you have an updo with fine hair?

Yes. Professional volumising products create thickness, texture and lift, and extensions can add the fullness and structure a sculpted updo needs. Try the style at your trial before the day.

Do I need extensions for my wedding if my hair is thin?

Not always. Preparation and professional volumising products can transform fine hair on their own. Extensions help when you want more fullness, structure, volume or length. Decide before your trial so they can be tried with your style.

Can I wear clip-in extensions just for my wedding day?

Yes. Clip-in extensions can be fitted on the morning of your wedding and removed that evening, so there is no long-term commitment.

What types of hair extensions are used for weddings?

Clip-in extensions, tape extensions and other temporary methods. Today’s extensions come in a wide range of colours, textures and lengths, so they can blend with your own hair.

How can I prepare thin hair for my wedding?

Start a good haircare routine months before the wedding, with treatments and products that improve condition, reduce breakage and support healthy growth. If your hair is shedding suddenly, speak to your GP.

What wedding hairstyles suit thin hair over 50?

The same approach works at any age: preparation, volumising products and, if you want them, extensions. Your trial is where you choose a style that suits your hair as it is now.

Can bridesmaids with fine hair have the same style as everyone else?

Yes, in most cases. Tell your stylist who has fine hair when you book, so it can be planned into the morning. There is more on planning the bridal party in my bridesmaid hair and makeup guide.
